What are QR codes and why should you use them? The big square box above is a QR code (QR stands for Quick Response) Why would I have generated this box? What is it’s purpose?
More and more people are using mobile phones to access the internet, and it can take a while to type in the URL to a particular website (especially if your keyboard is particularly small) so it is a good idea to use a QR code, as it can be scanned by your mobile phone (via the camera function – you will need a QR reader app) and it will then show you the details which you can click on. Much easier than typing in a URL, or writing down a phone number, remembering words or an SMS. If you’ve never tried to use a QR code, or are wondering what my QR code links to, give it a try (scan the code above) – let me know where it goes to….
If you want to generate a QR code yourself, you can find QR code generators via Google, I used this one here.
If you want to download a QR code reader application to your phone, there are lots to choose from. I’ve chosen to use ScanLife Barcode Reader for my Android HTC Desire HD, however, here’s a list of the top 5 Barcode Scanners for Android from pocketpicks.co.uk, but there are plenty available for i-phones and Blackberry devices too.
Where could you use your QR code? You will already notice them appearing on bus shelters, leaflets, magazines, but think about where else you could use them. How about on your website, so that folks can save the URL to your site to use on their mobile phone. Your business card would look pretty cool with them on, and imagine how much easier to scan your business card and have the number appear on screen, so that you can just press the call button. Is it lazy? Perhaps, but it sure saves time, and means that I’m more likely to keep your business card!
Try generating your own QR code, and posting on your Facebook page wall, then post the link on the comments below, so that I can see what it says – it’s a great way to get us all to go look at your Facebook page too!
